During yoga lessons Manly, we get on the yoga mat barefoot and this gives us a chance to take a moment and breathe. It also helps us connect to our healthy roots and strings, all the way through the floor and feels grounded. Read on to learn a few things about practising yoga barefoot.

It helps the teacher see what you are doing and to help you adjust accordingly

Teachers teach a sequence of yoga poses in a variety of ways. They do this by demonstrating the poses, giving hands-on adjustments and verbally explaining the yoga poses as well as explaining possible adjustments that students should do. The teacher should be able to know what the student is doing for him or her to make the necessary adjustments.

One of the most frequent verbal cues that yoga teachers use is to ground the big toe. During standing postures, this verbal cue helps distribute the pressure and weight evenly across the foot and leg to avoid possible injuries in the ankle area. Yoga teachers can place their hands on your feet to encourage you to align properly. When yoga students wear socks, a yoga teacher will not have a clear picture of what they are doing with their feet and so they miss the necessary physical adjustments.

Should you wear socks?

Most professionals do not wear socks during yoga. The main reason is that socks can be slippery and even slide off when doing certain poses in a yoga studio. However, if you are practising gentle poses and you are feeling cold then you can wear socks.

A lot of students, especially beginners, prefer keeping their socks on during yoga classes. For physically demanding poses, socks can slip off and this is when most students take off their socks after realizing that it doesn’t work fine with socks. It is important to remember that we produce a lot of heat when practising yoga, especially when it is hot and this could make it too hot to wear socks when practising yoga.

Some practitioners may be conscious and choose socks for this particular reason. The truth is that the more you practice yoga, the more you accept yourself. So, in this case, it is important to focus on not how you look but on what your body can do. When you shift perspective and start practising barefoot, you will know why it is important to practice yoga barefoot.

Yoga shoes and socks

Some people feel uncomfortable barefoot and others have existing injuries. There is a wide range of yoga shoes and socks you can wear during yoga. These are designed for yoga practice and are less slippery. They also allow more movement and flexibility.

Staying safe when practising yoga barefoot

During yoga lessons Manly, it is essential to stay safe when practising yoga barefoot. This comes down to your hygiene. The yoga class should be as clean as possible. It is therefore important for yoga students to take a shower before class. They should also clean their feet before stepping on the mat to keep everyone safe.
